Examining the advancements in contemporary implant dentistry: Enhancing patient care through innovative concepts and techniques

This presentation will explore how innovations and concept changes shape our skills and treatment planning solutions, while underscoring the importance of collaborative planning between restoring dentist, technician and surgical team members.

Surgical concepts that will be reviewed include virtual planning and guided surgery/provisional treatment, implant placement and restoration strategies for small and large edentulous sites, and management of hard and soft tissue deficiencies. Current diagnostic guidelines and methods to monitor health, and our approaches to reduce and mitigate disease risk will be discussed.

The following learning objectives will be explored in this presentation:

  1. Peri-implant diseases and complications: understand, minimize and manage them.
  2. Recognize why digital workflows are dramatically improving accuracy and practice efficiency, while reducing errors in the treatment planning phase, surgical protocols and restorative design.
  3. Deciding on immediate, early or delayed implant placement and restoration protocols. Recognize the pros and cons of these decisions. The use and fabrication of customized transitional restorative components in the hands of the periodontist or restoring clinician: Why they are important steps in guiding tissue form.
  4. Soft and hard tissue enhancement procedures used in surgical practice today. Recognize what the surgical team can do, but understand the limitations.

Our session on September 24, 2024, will focus on gingival recession.  The meeting will start at 5:30 with dinner provided by Stonehouse Catering.

Gingival recession is a common finding in dental patients. Should they be concerned? How and when should monitoring versus treatment be considered? This module will review various causes of gingival recession and explain why patients should be concerned. Participants will be encouraged to discuss how they speak with their patients about gingival recession and its significance. Methods for classification of gingival recession and how they might impact treatment options as well as outcomes will be reviewed. After completing this module, participants should feel more comfortable speaking with patients about gingival recession and have a better understanding of treatment options and their expected results.

Educational Objectives:

  • Identify risk factors and causes for gingival recession
  • Discuss methods for monitoring gingival recession
  • Describe how to measure gingival recession in simple and complex situations
  • Review methods for classification of gingival recession and how they relate to expected outcomes of various treatment options
  • Review treatment options for gingival recession and indications for gingival grafting
